Family Law
At James Bruce Richardson, P.C., we focus on any legal issue affecting a family, and we like to think of the family as our client. We assist families with domestic matters, estate planning, probate administration, and juvenile law matters.
We understand the emotional impact family law matters have on you and your family. Our goal is to help you through your legal problems by providing exceptional legal representation combined with personal attention, honesty, and open communication.
Divorce
The main aspect of our family law practice includes divorce and related issues that frequently arise during the course of divorce proceedings. These matters include child custody, child support, and alimony. In addition, we assist families with modifications of custody and support orders when circumstances have changed, as well as prenuptial and postnuptial agreements.
Our goal is to try to preserve family harmony as much as possible. We are very conscious of the cost of litigation, and we encourage utilization of alternative dispute resolution methods such as mediation and arbitration to obtain a faster, more amicable resolution. We also encourage you to come together with your spouse and reach an agreement about the terms of the divorce so that you can avoid costly litigation. However, if attempts to come to an amicable agreement prove unsuccessful, we have significant experience in divorce litigation, and we will go to court to protect your rights.
Estate Planning and Probate
We also assist families with estate planning matters, including preparing simple wills and trusts. For clients who need assistance with more complex estate planning matters, we work with experienced estate planning attorneys.
After a loved one has passed away, we assist their family with probate administration, which is the legal process by which any debts of the decedent are paid and the decedent's estate is distributed to his or her heirs as set forth in the will, or if the person died without a will, in accordance with Georgia's laws governing intestate succession. Sometimes a dispute will arise as to whether a will is valid or if the executor of the estate is properly performing his or her duties; we have the experience to successfully resolve such cases.
